Week 8 Reflective post

This week we filmed our first prototype for our movie. What went well was that we managed to get a lot of filming done which managed to fulfil our expectations that day - Get as much done as we could. However, what we could have changed was that we could have had Adam there so that we could also get his opinion.

Reflective Post week 7

This week was very productive as we got most of our paperwork for our pre-production done to a good quality. This week was very helpful towards our opening sequence as we got our shooting script done so we know more or less of what we're going to film and how we are going to film then. We also arranged our schedule for when we are going to film which got us more organised on our timetable to film.

Recci

These are the images of our location. The first few images were our first intention and the second set of images are the images that are for the new plan. They show images of locations where drugs are taken and different shots of the school which is where our opening sequence was shot.

Editing techniques

Lately I have learned new editing techniques that can help to improve my opening sequence to make it more realistic. Here are examples of them:

Eyeline match - When the audience wants to see what the character is seeing. In this clip, the audience will want to see where the character is seeing, for example the eye contact that is currently being made and their views towards the cigarretes.

Graphic match - Where the sound matches what is being currently viewed. In this scene, when the explosion is visualized, it is followed up by sounds of things exploding, glass breaking etc. This adds more realism to the current situation.

Jump cut - A sudden transition from one thing to another to speed up the process of a current action. In this clip, there is quick transitions of him preparing himself so that this scene can be done quicker.

Crosscutting - The cutting between 2 or more scenes to show action from different locations. In this part of the movie, crosscutting is used to show the similarity between the two different locations and how they can link together as in both of the locations, there is small conflict happening which links both scenes  together.

Parallel editing - Continuously alternating two or more scenes which are happening simulatenously. From this scene, as the action is happening at the same time, the audience would believe that the police is breaking into the crazy man's house but instead they break into the wrong house which can add confusion yet interest into the scenes that will follow up.

Cutaway - When something is said, the current scene is paused and a reference to the audience is shown. In this scene from Family Guy, a cutaway is used to reference the audience when Lois says "the kids aren't learning anything at that Italian school" and the use of the different scene just shows that to the audience.

Transitions:

Dissolve - Where the image dissolves away into something else
Wipe - A transition that cleans away a scene to move into another
Fade In - A slow transition in which the images fades into the screen
Fade out - A slow transition in which the scene slowly fades away from the screen
Super imposition - To edit something or someone into the scene(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNTu06FY_uM)

Visual effects - Effects that are not real but can be made to add more emphasis into something, for example over dramatized explosions or lightsabers, lazers etc. In Star Wars lightsabers are widely used as lightsabers obviously don't exist.

Week 6 reflective post

This week I looked at and designed a timeline about the evolution of BSR movies - looking at how they were designed in the 1960s and then moving onto present times. What I saw from this was the evolution of the diversity in characters for example in the 1960s, it was rare to find a black actor to be in a BSR whilst in the present times of 2000-2010 there is a greater diversity as there are black characters, asian characters, hispanics and white. Because of this I know that I should have more characters of a larger diversity.

What's In the news?

The headline above says "Dad's secret drinking was a sign of the disease that killed him". From this headline,  we created our own idea.

The themes that we use are: Depression, isolation, escapism, youth corruption and alcohol abuse. These themes mostly fit into the criteria of a broken down family for these are most of the problems that can occur if there are various problems occurring.

We have various characters:

The family is composed of Mike, Margaret, David and Chris. They all live in a large house in Chelsea which shows that the business that Mike is running is payin
g off for them.
Mike is the father of two sons, he is 41 and works as the co-owner at a local bar in Tottenham court road. He has a massive drinking problem, which is effecting his life every day and this obsessive drinking is leading to health problems which can kill him in the future.
Mike has two sons: David who is 14 and Chris who is 17. They both attend a private school which they dislike.
Margaret is the wife of Mike who is obsessed with money and is currently depressed as she is thinking of divorcing Mike because of the current troubles that is happening in the family.

The plot goes as following:
Mike lives in a very upper class area in Chelsea. He feels that everything around him is changing to the worse side of things and also his sons do not care about Mike as they are just stuck up in their own world and his wife is constantly nagging towards him as she may want a future divorce. Despite their luxury in their house, Mike feels at home when he is in his pub, his daily job.Mike is the co-owner of the pub along with a man called Anthony. However, Mike feels that Anthony is very arrogant and finds him annoying to work with. Mike also has a drinking problem, causing him to drink large amounts of alcohol each day but helps him fight through his depression. Consequently, he has a heart disease and believes that it has come from his drinking problem and because of this disease, he has constant blackouts that can happen at any time. One day, Anthony, the owner of the pub is found dead and Mike was near the scene at that time, but because of his blackouts he is unable to remember anything that has happened to Anthony. Later on that day, he finds himself owner of the pub but this is a struggle for him as he cannot contain his need for drinks at the pub. This results to his business fluctuating as his alcohol supplies decrease. Therefore, one day he meets a drug dealer at his pub which offers him drugs to put in alcohol. He agress and makes a business out of it but leaving the drug a secret from the public. The pub becomes famous but also attracts his son to become an addict that leaves him to a moral decision to whether shut down the pub or keep the money going.

From this headline, the themes that I would create could involve: Youth corruption, violence and potentially drug abuse for these are themes that are seen in a lot of British Social realisms.

Characters:

The main characters will be a gang of boys who are looking to cause trouble.

Toby -
Skin Colour - Black
Age - 17
Toby is the leader of the gang. He is a college drop-out for he always wanted to perform crime by taking drugs and performing vandalism. He lives with his mum for his dad left him when he was only 3. He lives in a council estate as they are a family who rely on benefits. Toby is also the one that provides the small gang with weapons such as knives and machetes.

DeShawn -
Skin Colour - Black
Age - 17
DeShawn took the same path as Toby, performing all the activities that he done for he knew the power that Toby had in society. DeShawn is a bright boy but decided to drop out of college and turn into the life of crime. He lives with his mum, dad and little brother in a large house in central London. However, his misbehaviour is starting to cause trouble within the family.

Dominique -
Skin Colour - Black
Age - 16
Dominique is the youngeset of the 3. He joins in with them as he wants to be part of a gang for he wants to understand the experience of living a life of mischief. He still attends secondary school and is soon doing his GCSE's but appears to be starting to fall in class as he is more interested in going out with his mates. He lives with his mum and dad in a small flat in South of London.

Monique -
Skin Colour - Black
Age - 16
Monique is the girl who causes the troubles that happens. She is a good-looking, smart girl who regularly attends school but also participates in activities with the 3 boys. She lives in a large house in the City with her mum, dad and smaller sister as they are a wealthy family who work in business departments.

Plot:

Toby and DeShawn are best mates who hang around together in college. Toby sees that college is useless for him and decides to drop out and be a full-time criminal. DeShawn has no option but to join him for he is a required part for Toby's plans even though DeShawn could be moving into brigther places, i.e universities. However, Toby persuades him and he has no choice but to drop out of college as well. Both of these boys travel around with no direct path but with one simple mission - commit crime. Vandalism and drugs are a large part of their routine which they perform day-to-day. Dominique had seen these boys travel around and seeing what they've been up to. Wondering what their next move would be, Dominique decides to follow them and later finds out of their mischevious actions. Curious, Dominique approaches them but immediately gets warned by Toby to stay back. Dominique doesn't fall back causing Toby to get annoyed and draw out a knife. Dominique continuously says that he only wants to join in and after a while, Toby agrees. Having fallen into peer-pressure, Dominique starts failing school in a crucial time which is the GCSE period. These 3 boys constantly hang around with eachother with nothing to bother their minds until troubles between them occur and all because of a girl  - Monique. Monique has always been a close friend  of Dominique but she was never introduced to the rest of the crew. Toby instantly finds her attractive and asks her on a date, causing fury in Dominiques head. Dominique talks to Toby about this date but Toby doesn't give a damn and goes through with it. Toby takes Monique home, but ends up walking her up to her bedroom. Things get spicy and they both have intercourse. When Dominique finds out, he gets furious, grabs a knife and runs towards her house. He bursts into her house, finding them both together in the same bed. Horrified at the sight of this, Dominique picks up his knife and slashes towards Toby. DeShawn suddenly appears behind Dominique carrying an axe and swings at him, severly chopping his arm. Both Toby and Dominique are rushed to A&E where they are treated but both later face prison. Monique and DeShawn are devastated but are forced to live on.

From this headline the main theme that I would use would be domestic violence as this headline clearly degrades women and also violence as if it degrades women, there will be a clear example of this happening.

The characters I would use could be:

Patrick - 42, Unemployed, lives in a council estate. Patrick abuses his wife every day after spending a a morning and afternoon at the local pub. He has no respect for women, especially his wife.

Elizabeth - 40, works as a waitress, lives with Patrick. She is constantly abused by her husband but refuses to tell anyone scared that Patrick will kill her. She does not know what to do and has no way out of this situation.

Plot:
Patrick and Elizabeth both live together in a small council estate in Stockwell. They have no children and Elizabeth is constantly suffering from domestic abuse from Patrick for he is an alcoholici who turns up at home drunk every evening, 24 hours a day. Elizabeth has no where to run or hide as she is afraid of the consequences that are coming her way. One night, Patrick comes home furious that his football team Arsenal lost (again) and is of course drunk. Being fed up of these poor displays, he decides to take his anger out on his wife and so grabs a kitchen knife. Helpless, Elizabeth has no other option but to scream but this is no use. Going to defend her face, Patrick slices two cuts on her hands and leaves her bleeding. Elizabeth begs him to stop but Patrick is not satisfied. Patrick forcefully undresses Elizabeth and forces her into rape. The next day, Elizabeth is fed up and seeks help at the police station. Spotted by one of Patrick's friends, Patrick is warned and waits for Elizabeth at home. Elizabeth arrives home only to find Patrick waiting in the couch with a revolver in his lap. Afraid of what is going to happen, Elizabeth makes a break for the entrance and starts running outside. Being chased by Patrick, she tries to run to the police station but gets shot in the back. Dieing a slow and painful death, Patrick watches her from above with a smirk in his face. Her eyes shut and Patrick walks away, only to be caught a few hours later, judged and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Conventions of Institutional credits

At the start of the film, there is not much that can be said as not a lot of action occurs. The only notable that can be seen is the clothing, lighting and location.

Firstly, the clothing that is being worn is fairly plain which adds to the realism that they are in a normal house and have no idea on what is going to occur.
The dark lighting adds the effect that it's a horror movie since most horror movies try to be dark so that it can add more tension since the viewers has no idea on what could happen next due to the lack of visibility. It also adds an effect of realism as the characters may also see as they too could have a lack of visibility on the house. Moreover, you can see that the location is in a sort of house which adds to the normal location of "a haunted house" which is where most of the creepy things in a horror movie happen.

From the institutional logo of the Conjuring, you can instantly tell that it's a horror movie. Firstly, I can see that there is a rope hanging from a tree which connotes murder and along with the fog that is around that tree, I can instantly tell that this murder will occur through mysterious ways which can tell me that the theme of the film will be horror.
Also, as the tree is slanted I can tell that the film will be creepy because it can give an effect that things are not normal which connotes that once again, the movie will have some unnatural things happening which can lead to the scare of many audiences.
Finally, the house towards the end of the institutional logo connotes that this will be the setting which the film will be set it.
In the title sequence, the typography is quite simple as it doesn't contain a special type of font. This connotes that the film could be quite simple and contains simple horror which can be effective since it can create a more sinister environment.
Also, some of the transactions occur that the name is displayed, the screen goes black and then the next family is displayed. This can be done to show that the family has been erased (killed) and the next family that shows up can be the next victims.
By creating this timeline, I now have a broader knowledge on where I should place my credits so that the viewer will take in more knowledge about the importance of who created the film, for example it would be a good idea to put the producer at the end.

Art of the Title Format for The Conjuring

The director of 'The Conjuring' is James Wan is a well known director, mostly known for his participation in The Conjuring, Insidious, Insidious Chapter 2, and also he helped in the making of Furious 7 which shows that the expectations for this movie are greatly high due to his previous work is high-quality. The director comes on after the main protagonists, at 00:21 which reflects that the director has the same importance as the protagonists especially since he was the one that created the movie. Also, the independence of his name in the title sequence shows that he is important since when a viewer watches this, they will only take in his name.

The producers are important for they are the ones who help in the main production of the film, and so their appearance at 00:29 shows their importance since the first people that are seen in the title sequences are usually the ones in whom the viewers should look at the most. Also, as all 3 of them were put at the same time it shows that they all equally had the same role of importance and so a viewer should memorise all 3.

The production designer is one of the most important roles in horror movies for they are the ones who have the ability to make the film scary. Julie Berghoff has experience in being the production designer for known movies, such as Saw, The Conjuring and Dead silence that suggests that she's experienced in horror and so a viewer will know from the start that her work on makeup and clothes will be of a high standard. The production designer appears at 00:44 which suggests that it may not be very important since it comes in the middle of the sequence, but they're also very important as they are the ones that can make a movie good.

This is the first character that appears in the opening sequence. This name appears at approximately 0:55 and as this is the first name that appears, it shows that this is the protagonist of the film as sequences usually create credits in order of importance; most important goes first. As a result, a viewer will know that he is the most important character and so they will be on the lookout for him.

The costume designer is the person that creates the costumes for the charaacters to wear. In a horror movie, the costume designer is very important for they are the ones that can drastically change the aspect of a person and can also change the opinion on a viewer towards a character. For example, in a horror movie, if a person is dressed up in quite ripped and poor clothes, it can be a hint that they are poor or that they are having trouble which can be an insinuation that they are the villain in the horror movie.

The music creator is also vitally important as they can set the tone for a scene, especially in a horror movie. For example, if there is a character stalking another character, the music creator can create a larger atmosphere by adding in music that can suit the scene, and thus adding more atmoshpere to it.

Towards the end of the sequence, there are credits which show the companies that helped towards the creation of the movie, and in this case the "Safran Company/Evergreen Media Group". They are put at the end since the last thing that you see is the thing that you remember and so, putting it at the end makes it so that the viewer can understand who helped to create the movie and so, this production gets more credit.

At the very end, the main producer, James Wan is shown. This is because the end is where the people will last see and so is the name
that they will mostly remember. Also, as the producer is at the end of the credits but also at the start it shows that he was the one that could have created the movie from start to end but the people in the middle are just his helpers.

Commissioner FactFile to Film Four

What is Film Four? What does it do? How did it start?

Film Four productions is a film production company who is owned by Channel 4 and the company has been responsible for the creation of many popular British films in the United Kingdom. Some of these films include 24 Hour Party People, Drowning by numbers and many more. Film Four also co-operates with other independent film production companies such as Warner Independent pictures.

Film4 was created at the inception of Channel4 in 1982. Film4 is also known as working with the most innovative talent in the UK, whether new or already established. It's output is distinguished by its voice as it resonates with audiences worldwide.

What themes are usually used?

Film4 does not produce movies which are aimed for a family audience which shows that their target audience is usually teenagers or adults. Film4 has managed to create a reputation with this has most of their movies are not appropriate for children as some of their main themes include violence, drugs and gangs but can also include some comedy. For example: This is England includes the themes of youth corruption, racism and violence which mainly corresponds  to the main themes that is used by Film4.
This video shows an example of racism  as the little boy is saying racist slurs such as "Paki bastard" which shows how he has been influenced by his gang mates. Also, the clip is an example of youth corruption because it can be seen the boy stealing cigarettes and at such a young age, stealing should not be influenced as it will be with him for the rest of his life.
Film4 does this so that it can give examples of the real life as when the strikes were happening, it shows many people were changing the way that they acted and that they were being forced into crime.

In this scene from Trainspotting, it can be seen Renton, one of the main characters injecting himself with heroin which a theme that Film4 uses  often. This example from Trainspotting is good because as Film4 uses drugs as a theme, it could be a warning of how drugs can affect someone and cause them to nearly die which can be a message from Film4 against the use of drugs.

The Inbetweeners - The Movie is an example of when film4 works as a co-producer to help creating a comedy movie. This scene from The Inbetweeners denotes the characters dancing together in a comedic way which connotes that Film4 also includes comedy in their films other than serious topics such as drugs or gangs. As a result, it shows that Film4 also tries to make movies for family audiences and not just teenagers who are looking to connect.

What is its ethos?

Film Four's set of beliefs are very clear. Film Four believes in investing money on young talent to produce great future actors by placing them in recently created movies. Also, Film Four works with other independent film industries by paying 15-25% of the whole budget. Moreover, it believes in giving £500,000 and making around 20 films per year.

Social Realism Timeline

Throughout the 1960s all the way to 2000s, British realism has changed in various ways

1960s - Crossroads to Crime

Crossroads to crime is a 1960s British Social Realism movie. In crossroads to crime. some of the themes are violence and crime. Some of the characters are Police Constable Don Ross who discovers a gang of lorry hi-jackers. Examples of mise-en-scene used in the movie includes guns, large vehicles and large shipments of cigarretes. The movie is filmed in black and white which adds impact on how old the movie is.

1970s - Performance

Performance is a movie created in 1968, but only released in 1970 and its main themes include sex, violence and fantasy.  The location of the film is in East London and some of the characters include Chas, who is a soldie in a gang. Some of the sound in the film are gunshots, which is a diagetic sound to show the violence in the movie. Some of the mise-en-scene include guns.

1980s - The Long Good Friday

The Long Good Friday is a movie created in the 1980s in which some of the themes include violence and murder. The location of Long Good Friday is in the streets of London and the main characters are Harold Shands and Victoria played by Hellen Mirren. The main sound in the movie is diagetic sound as it comes from guns and explosions so that it can add more realism and enthusiasm towards the audience viewing the movie.

1990s - Life is Sweet

Life is sweet is a movie from the 1990s about a British family which faces some problems. The main themes in Life is Sweet relationships between the family as it's a movie who is mostly focussed on only them and no side characters. The film is shot in London and the main characters include Wendy, the mother, Andy the father and Nicola and Natalie, the two twin daughters. Most of the music played is the same type of background music which is a fairly happy song which shows that the family is happy all along the movie.

2000s  - Kidulthood

Kidulthood is a British drama film whose main focus is the teenagers' challenges when they depart from school. Kidulthood mostly focuses on gangs and violence and is set in the Western parts of London - Ladbroke Grove. Some of the sound that is used in Kidulthood is diagetic sound and an example of this is the R'n'b that is played so that the audience will connect to them as they too could listen to that type of music.

2010s - Four Lions

Four lions is a BSR film which involves four 'terrorists' and their plans on when they are going to do in a terrorist attack. Some characters in Four Lions are Omar, Hassan, Barry and Raj. The main themes are terrorism and comedy as Four Lions implements them both into one. The location in which Four Lions is set in is in Pakistan and Britain. Some sounds are diagetic, for example the firing of rockets.

The main things that I saw when I reviewed these films was the difference in characters, for example only until 2000s was there a mixture of races as before that, the films were mostly portrayed by white characters which shows how society has changed in the portrayal of their movies.

Week 5 reflective post

This week I learned about different themes that are used in BSR's such as corruption of youth, drug use and violence. These themes will give me more ideas in what I could use to create my own opening sequence as all of these themes are used often and thus I can look at these movies and gain more ideas. Also, I compared themes between BSR and Hollywood so that I know the difference of things that are used in BSR and in Hollywood movies so that I do not confuse myself and accidentally use something that would be more conventional in a Hollywood movie and not in a BSR. So, this exercise helped me to figure out differences between Hollywood and BSR which will help me in the future.

Mckees classic narrative structure

McKee's classic  narrative structure

Exposition - protagonists
Our main protagonists are:
Edward - A rich kid who gets involved in drugs
Bailee - A gang leader who starts dealing with Edward
Douglas (Doug) - A gang member
Raheem (R-Dope) - A gang member

Agents of change -
Our antagonists are the other gang who gets into brawls with the main gang. This secondary gang is called SUK. They are too involved in drugs and start brawling due to drugs.

Conflict -
The conflict occurs when KUS comes and starts to braw with the main gang. The conflict causes Edward to get into more trouble for he is confused on whether to help his gang or to just leave and let them fight their own battle.

Elaboration -
Huge brawls start to occur over the cocaine. KUS's leader starts the robbery of the cocaine which leaves FAM very annoyed and thus want to seek revenge. Fighting constantly occurs and both clans agree to a decisive battle.

Climax + Resolution

In the final battle, Edward decides that he will help to fight off KUS which leaves him in great danger. In the final battle, Bailee dies along with two members of KUS. R-Dope & Douglas get injured and so leave, leaving only Edward who doesn't back down and takes on the leader of KUS. Both have a fight which ends in Edward getting stabbed and consequently killed.

Coda -

We do not have  a CODA.

Comparing BSR to Hollywood

Comparing BSR to Hollywood

At the end of the clip, in Fast and Furious there is a light palate in the scene when he is in the desert to connote that his life is relaxed and thus it tells a viewer that all the bad things from his life has passed. However, in the second clip of Fish Tank, at approximately 10 minutes, when she is walking down the road the lighting is quite dull as it is a cloudy day and so this tells an audience that her day is not being good since it isn't any bright around her.

In the movie 'The Island', in this scene there are a lot of short takes as there is constant editing to make the scenes short. The director did this so that the viewer could see the constant action that is happening around and the viewer would also be able to see what the various characters are doing and thus keep the viewer excited. However, in a scene of 'Meantime', there is a very long take of the people hanging around a broken washing machine. There is no editing in that scene as it goes on for around 2 minutes in the same position which connotes that they have very boring lives as the camera is only focussed in that specific scene.

In the first scene, the battle in Omaha Beach from the movie Saving Private Ryan, there is clearly very jerky movements in 9/10 of the shots that were shown. This is because the director wanted to portray more realism as there are bullets flying everywhere and soldiers rushing around from side to side. As a result, the use of the jerky camera movements shows that there is panic all-round and the director wants to get this panic and give it back to the audience.
In the second clip from 'Life is Sweet', there are no jerky movements as the camera is mostly still. This is to show the realism back in the 1990s as life was calm and there was no action happening at the time. Therefore, the use of a constantly still camera just shows how calm their life is compared to Saving Private Ryan.

The top scene is from 'Ultraviolet' and it is very clear that there is a lot of CGI involved in here which is typical of a Hollywood movie. CGI effects were used to portray a fake reality as the director wanted to exaggerate on the things that could be done with a motorbike and all other equipment that was used.  However, the CGI didn't work that well because the graphics used were quite bad but it still showed an unimaginable reality that could attract audiences.
In the second clip from the movie 'London kills me', there is very little to no CGI because it is a British Social Realism. It is one of the most rare things to find CGI on a BSR because the director wants to portray realism and not fake, unrealistic things.
In Hollywood movies, handheld cameras are quite uncommon as they instead of showing realism, they want to focus more on quality of the video so that the audience will enjoy it. Even if there are very small examples of handheld camera shots in Hollywood films, it is mostly common to have still cameras.
In BSR, handheld cameras are quite common, which is seen in this example of this scene on Fish Tank. This is because the director wants to give the audience the idea of following the character so that the audience can see what the character is seeing and so adds an idea of realism to the audience for they are able to have the same perspective as the followed character.

How British Social Realism themes are used

Drug Abuse/ Drug Experiment
In this small scene from the movie Trainspotting, it can be denoted one of the people doing heroin, as he inserts it into his vein which connotes that he has an addiction to one of the most powerful drugs there is. After the scene, it is denoted that he passes out due to the effects of the heroin and is then taken to an emergency room which can connote that the scene is trying to depict some of the bad effects of heroin and thus telling a viewer that doing heroin can have bad effects on a person's body. I could explore this idea of depicting the harmfulness of a drug to send out a message to a viewer of the effects of drug use or some of the good short term effeects.

Violence

At the start of this scene from Bulletboy, it is denoted gun violence when one of the teenagers shoots a dog twice in an attempt to scare the other person which connotes that the teenager with the gun will do anything to be able to show his superiority. The way of violence is represented in the scene because the teenager with the gun fires two bullets which is able to cause the other person to become afraid and so it connotes that using gun violence can be the only way in which he can show his power. I could use violence in my film to possibly represent conflict amongst two different cultures.

Corruption of Youth

In this scene of 'Let him have it' is denoted at the start of the scene two boys breaking in which connotes that they have been corrupted into commiting crimes, especially Derek Bentley who has been corrupted by Christopher Craig into doing the crime with him. Later on in the scene, it is also denoted Christopher shooting a police officer which connotes their use of violence. The theme is represented in the sequence to depict their criminal ways and to show to an audience that they are willing to commit a crime which can cost them their lives. I could use corruption of youth in my film to show how some of the youth today has resorted to crime to make a living.

Racism

At the start of the movie Yasmin, racism can be denoted when it says "Paki Go Home" spray painted on a garage door which connotes the racism that is occuring in Britain in the era of the 21st Century. The theme is represented in the sequence as it shows an audience about the racism that is going against muslims in Britain which can give an idea to the viewers about the sort of behaviour happening. I would use racism in my own film to make it slightly more realistic as racism can be a big part in someone's life who lives in Britain, especially if they are from another culture.

 Aspiration and escape

In this clip, it is denoted Billy Elliot dancing ballet in an audition which connotes how far he has gone in this project of him becoming a professional ballet dancer. The theme of 'Aspiration and Escape' is denoted as at the current era of time, ballet was very rare to be performed by boys as they would rather be doing sports such as football or boxing but for Billy he wanted to go with ballet which shows that this was his bigger aspiration. The theme is represented in the sequence as Billy is using the ballet to express his feelings towards the judges as his dance is quite rapid and doesn't really have a flow which shows his excitement. I could use this theme to inspire others to follow what they want to do.

Week 4 reflective post

In this week, we improved our knowledge about sounds & mise-en-scene so that we have a more thorough knowledge for our exam and for future filming references. This was a very helpful week because these sounds can now help me improve my future filming for example since I now know what foley sounds are then I could potentially use them so that I could make my sounds more realistic such as footsteps. Also, knowing more about mise-en-scene such as lighting and actors can add more realism to my filming as I know how I can improve the quality of my work.

Mise-En-Scene evaluation Billy Elliot

Production Design

In Billy Elliot, the production design was made to fit the current time so that a viewer can further understand the current era in which Billy Elliot is set in. For example, nowadays, it would be rare to see in 21st century Britain, boys fighting using boxing gear as football would be the most dominant sport. Therefore, this production design can give a viewer a more detailed insight into when Billy Elliot is set and so add more realism.

Lighting
In some scenes of Billy Elliot, the lighting changes quite drastically to show how Billy is feeling at the time. For example, in the image of Billy at the graveyard, the lighting around the set becomes lighter to show possibly how his mother is in heaven and thus a brighter light is being sent towards Billy which can show the affection that he had with his mother.

Actors
In Billy Elliot, the actors such as Billy's dad seem to have a quite strong accent from the North, which adds more realism as there were a lot of miners strikes happening at the time and so, giving them an accent can make a viewer be even more sure on where the movie is set. Moreover, the dominant race in the movie was clearly white which once again shows where the movie could be set as there was very little different groups of people around.

Color
Much like lighting, color varies in different scenes to show the different moods of Billy. For example, when his ballet teacher was reading him her mother's note, the colors were fairly bright and dark at the same time. This is to show that there is a difference in feelings towards Billy - happiness and sadness.

 Era
The era can be very easily figured out due to the riots that occur during the movie. As there were plenty of riots occuring during the 1980s, a viewer can easily guess that this was the time in which the film was set in. Moreover, the use of a gym for a boxing ring and ballet practice shows that there wasn't much money which was a problem back in the 1980s due to the inflation that was occurring because of the current strikes.
