Media - Preliminary Task - The Encounter

Media Preliminary Task

                             The Encounter

What I have to do is :
A character opens a door, crosses a room and sits down in a chair opposite another character, with  whom she/he then exchange a couple of lines of dialogue

Me and my group which consists of Tselmuun Gerel and Chi Wen Ha are going to create a small piece which mostly tries to mostly express interest and some humor. We are going to be using a variety of camera shots, such as 'Over The Shoulder', 'Extreme close up', 'Very long Shot' and many more. We are going to use this large variety of camera shots so that our knowledge of them are expressed and so that the clip can be seen from various angles. Moreover, we have to keep in mind to be consistent, for example if we are going to film the same scene but from another angle, we must make sure that the props are in the same place so that it seems professional. Also, we have to follow the Rule of Thirds so that our scenes show no dead space. Moreover, the 180 degree rule needs to be used so that when we use the 'Over the Shoulder' shots, our faces will not seem weird.

In this image, we have done the storyboard for the beginning. In the first frame,    there is Tselmuun opening the door. In the second frame, the same action is being done but on the other side. Within the third frame, there is Tselmuun walking across the playground. In the final frame, we have a close up shot of Tselmuun's feet tripping up.
In the first frame, there is a medium shot  of Tselmuun's body falling forwards. In the second frame, there is a very long shot of the background with Tselmuun's body lying on the floor. On the third shot, there's a big close up of my face being shocked and in the 4th frame there's a very long shot of me running towards Tselmuun.
In the first frame, there is a medium long shot of me and holding out my hand to help Tselmuun up. In the 2nd frame, there is another medium long shot of me and Tsel holding hands to help each other stand up. In the third frame there is a very long shot of me and Tselmuun walking together and in the 4th frame there is a medium shot of me and Tselmuun also walking together.
In all 4 frames, there is a over the shoulder shot of me and Tselmuun talking to each other on the benches.
In the first 2 frames, we are still conversating in an over the shoulder shot type. In the 2 final frames, there is an extreme close up to our eyes to show friendship.

Weeks 1 and 2 Reflective Post

Weeks 1& 2

During the first few weeks, I learned new information that expanded my knowledge on the topic of Media Studies such as , the meaning of different camera shots and different camera angles. I will be using these skills to put them into my own small scene to be able to display my knowledge for them.

 Uses and Gratifications Theory.

I have also learnt about the meaning of the  Uses And Gratifications Theory. The meaning is that  a viewer of a certain text will use it for different purposes. Such as a viewer could use it for information, for example a viewer could retain information on a certain topic or even entertainement.

Repetition and difference theory

I also learned about the Repetition and Difference theory which is that the text being done will stay the same throughout, but could be changed so that it could please an audience. This theory was done by Steve Neale.

Others

I have also learned about a new word which I had never heard of , 'Schadenfreude' which means pleasure from pain. An example of this is that if someone falls over, the other person watching will most likely laugh at them.

Mise-en-scéne is another thing that I looked at. Mise-en-scéne is basically the background of a certain image which can include:

P - Production  , props, and costumes

L - Lighting -Ambient, Artificial and Natural

A - Actors- How they perform

C - Colour design - The colours used

E - Era - The time in where the text is done, for example 1050, or 2014
All of these techniques will surely help me in creating my small piece as they will give me knowledge on the things that I could do.

Breaking Bad - First season trailer

I will be reviewing the first season trailer for Breaking bad. It's a story about a father, a chemist and a cancer sufferer. Breaking bad will show the audience about the struggles that Walter White goes through to get rid of the disease. It's a thrilling TV series which is packed with action and suspense.

The first season trailer displays the things that Walter White goes through; being the chemistry teacher, him collapsing and getting the idea to start cooking meth, which is the only way for him to pay for his chemotherapy. The trailer starts off with the protagonist being wished his 50th happy birthday from his family. This links in with the gratification and uses theory as the adults who are the same age and are watching Breaking Bad as they could feel the same way that the protagonist is feeling and thus would want to continue watching so that they would understand how his life would plan itself out and could give an idea to the audience as the same things could happen.

Furthermore, watching Breaking Bad can be used for entertainment as it can divert you from real life problems. So, people that could be facing a hard day or week would use Breaking Bad to escape from the outer world or use it for excitement as there are many parts which can make a viewer really be intrigued with the obstacles facing Walter White.

Miracle at St.Anna

Miracle at St.Anna is a WW2 inspired movie about 4 African-Americans that have been deployed to Italy. These 4 men have to fight through emotionally and physically against the Nazi powers in Italy. It is once again an action packed movie which includes many examples of the Uses and Gratifications theory.

The text appeals to me as it satisfies my thirst for knowledge. I personally enjoy watching WW2 movies as I want to know more about the battles that occured in the world war. So, not only me, but everyone else and especially African-Americans  with a hunger for knowledge to do with wars will most likely enjoy this movie as you can understand the troubles that these soldiers go through.

Other than information, the movie can also give a gratification of gaining insight onto one's self as people who may have also been deployed to wars may understand how these soldiers feel and what actions they are forced to do, even if it's only a movie. Therefore, people who may have fought in wars can enjoy this movie as they can relate to the characters.

E-Media

League of Legends
League of Legends is an online game which users play together to complete an objective to be victorious. League of Legends appeals to me very much because of the friendly community and relaxing game play the most competitive game mode. Therefore, a pleasant experience can be felt.

In League of Legends, an example of a Use and Gratifications theory is entertainment .as it can give me an excitement appeal. This can be done when I create very good tactics and end up achieving an objective. Achieving this can make me satisfied with myself and reach an excitement level in which it makes me want to play more. Moreover, winning a game of League can bring a great feeling of pride as sometimes it can be very difficult and even if I lose the game i still get the gratification that I know that I can improve.

Another gratification which I get is that I can use it for social interaction as I can play with my friends. Because of this, i is very good as the next day we can discuss talking about it and talk about the great plays that we did.

Garry's mod is a sandbox game in which you can interact either online or in single player. In this game, you can virtually do anything; from jumping around buildings to creating wars between NPCs. Also, I find the game  very intriguing as there are various game modes in which we can choose from, such as prop hunt.

The game has many uses and gratifications, such as:there is a game mode in which you can role play as a character of your choice. What I enjoy is that I like to feel that I am in the game and actually being the character. This gives me a lot of fun as I can escape from reality and change to a virtual game.
I can also use the game for social interaction

Print Entertainment

The metro is a tabloid newspaper designed to appeal people of all ages. The metro appeals to me because it has news in which I would enjoy reading, such as sports news. Therefore, it's an interesting newspaper which many people enjoys reading.

The Metro newspaper first in to the Uses and Gratifications theory, for example many people use it for information. From the metro, people can extend their knowledge by looking at the news from all around the world. They can use this information to increase their self-esteem as they could tell this new knowledge to their friends and seem smarter than before.

Also, people could use the newspaper to pass time. They can use it as a form of relaxing and passing the time as they would be looking at the news and with nothing else in their minds.

Teen Vogue is a magazing aimed at teengaers, but mostly girls. It talks about fashion and things to "improve life". Teen Vogue can be appealing to teenagers because it includes topics that girls would want to see, such as how to become slim or how to become happier in life. This attracts audiences as they would want to know these facts and using it to tell their friends (information).

Another gratification is that girls would probably imagine being the celebrity that they are seeing on the magazine. This could bring emotional pleasure as they would imagine how it would feel to have cameras around and being photographed by people. This could make them want to have a life goal of being like them as they are imagining being them.
