Production Design
In the trailer for the movie Kes, it is denoted throught out the entire of the trailer his dirty clothes which he wears everyday which connotes that the wealth of his family is very low as they are not able to afford ways to wash his clothes, or to even change his clothes on a regular basis. Moreover, Billy is denoted to being quite dirty which can be even shown by the makeup that he is wearing which is denoted by making him have a face which doesn't look clean which once again illustrates the difficult times that his family could be going through as they are unable to give him a bath or shower to clean off the dirt.
This image depicts how his face is which shows the filthyness within his face as it can be seen some areas of his face which do not seem clean. From that picture it can also be seen how his clothes do not seem clean as there are patches on his shirt which make it look unclean.
Era
In Kes, when it was denoted that Billy and someone else from his school got into a fight together at the school premesis, it was shown that they started to fight in a small mountain of coal which connotes that the era that the movie was set in was during the 1970s-80s as in the modern times it was very rare to find any source of coal inside a school whilst 30-40 years ago, coal production was very neccessary for most people in England and so it had to be stored so that it could be used in future times.
Lighting
Also, when Billy is at home the lighting of the set turns dark into a point where it's quite hard to see facial expressions of the people within the set at the time which connotes that Billy may feel depressed when he's at home as if the lighting was brigher, then it could increase the mood of the audience and of the actors, but as the lighting is dark and blunt then it connotes the unhappiness of Billy. However, when Billy is on the outside in the field with Kes, the lighting appears to be lighter than when he was at home which could be the effect of natural light which connotes that Billy is happier when he is in the presence of natural light and when he is with Kes which shows that Kes is what makes him happier.
